10. Learning how to navigate databases

Although I still find navigating databases quite challenging because the sheer amount of information they contain, I think learning how to navigate databases and more specifically, Summon, NC State’s own database which can also be used to search through NCSU’s libraries, was an extremely useful tool and I understand how to use them now. Learning about the advanced search on summon really helped me find my very own sources for projects.

9. “Zion you look confused”

Hearing about and seeing Zion’s various facial expressions was a pretty entertaining segment of class, it never failed to make me laugh.

8. Watching the office scenes

I had never actually watched the office prior to the one class period where it was played since I arrived early. It was very entertaining and not only did it make me laugh, but it made me feel like the classroom had a casual and open environment.

7. Deconstructing narratives

I really enjoyed the classes in which we read various pieces and discusses the authors “literacy”, it was really interesting to explore how the author's background affected their writing and their life as a whole. I particularly loved the Sherman Alexie piece!

6. Me time

I set a morning schedule for myself since I have english almost every morning. This allowed me to get a healthy amount of sleep, eat breakfast, and still make it to the classroom early so I could sit and either relax and watch some youtube videos (I watched this one music video almost every morning, whoops!) or work on assignments. I liked having this bit of time before class in the quiet classroom setting because it was easy to focus or wind down.

5. Feeling confident about rhetorical analysis

I really liked learning about rhetorically analyzing visual arguments. I was really invested in project 2, and I feel like I’ve continued to develop the skills I learned and I have a good understanding of my skill. For example, I once found myself pointing out the weaknesses of a music video theory to my friend because there was some description but there was not much analysis, which was something I worked hard on to improve in my own rhetorical analysis.

4. Getting extensions

I have been on the struggle bus this semester, with a concussion and constantly getting sick. I’ve found that getting extensions and speaking to the instructor really eased my nerves and the flexibility really allowed me to do my best on my assignments despite my circumstances.

3. My new skills

I feel like this class has really helped me learn how to analyze a description that I have provided, and given me the tools to ask myself questions in order to deepen my analysis when I write (most of the time I constantly ask myself “why was this included?” but it usually does the trick). I have also learned about the elements of design and how to use them to help analyze visual arguments. Now I better understand visual arguments because I understand why certain design elements might have been used and what they are conveying.

2. Writing in the various disciplines

In my future classes, I know I will have to continue to write all sorts of papers. Additionally, because I am an education major with a STEM concentration, I will be taking classes in all of the disciplines so I can use my experience in english class to improve my writing in my other classes. I unfortunately have to take lots of STEM classes, but now I can apply my writing techniques from the adaptation of a natural science article when I write for those classes, for example when to use jargon and when to explain it.

1. Developing my writing

Writing is very important to me personally. I wanted to minor in creative writing and while I learned that unfortunately I can not do this with the strict schedule of my major, I still want to pursue writing as part of my career. I would like to explore the world of writing and reading children’s literature and this is one of my long term goals because it is something I am passionate about. In order to pursue this, I need to continue to develop as a writer and this course has helped me with this tremendously. I am still growing and I am happy with the progress I am making.
