Reason for applying: I would love the opportunity to get involved in writing and publishing articles. While my passion in writing resides in predominantly creative pieces, I would also like to delve into writing and adapting natural sciences articles.
I would like to do this because often times, natural science studies are underrepresented in the media or often misinterpreted. For example, a “journal study” was released and concluded that vaccines lead to autism and which caused a scare among certain media users and encouraged them to not vaccinate their children but soon after it was found that the methods that the researcher provided could not be replicated, the results had been modified, and the researchers medical license had been revoked.
I would like to combat these types of issues by providing accurate information that is relevant to our everyday lives. NCSU Technician is available all over campus and easily accessible to students, and I would love to be able to meet other like minded students who are interested in adapting and sharing this kind of information, or students who are simply interested in reading and learning about it.
Plans: I would like to adapt these articles while also including multimodal components to make the adaptation easier to follow and understand for students. For example, I would include various graphs, charts, etc. I would also include a section defining words that can be more difficult to understand.
The Technician primarily focuses on NC State news, and I believe what I would like to do for our students qualifies. Our students should remain updated about important scientific findings that affect them and their futures.
